Craig Hartsburg was fired as head coach of the Ottawa Senators on Sunday night, only 48 games into his first season behind the team’s bench.

The final straw for Hartsburg was Sunday’s 7-4 loss to the Washington Capitals.

“We just weren’t making any progress,” General Manager Bryan Murray said during Monday’s news conference. “We’re struggling to keep up.

“I think when we started this year, we all believed this group would be a good team. We had fairly high expectations. We also believed that we would rebound from a shaky start. We kept hoping there would be some change in our performance, which didn’t seem to be taking place.”

Hartsburg signed a three-year contract in June of 2008, taking over for current general manager Bryan Murray. His 17-27-7 record has left Ottawa with 41 points, which is the third worst point total in the league.

Hartsburg, who was the third coach Ottawa has employed since since they appeared in the Stanley Cup finals in 2007, has been replaced for the rest of the season by Binghamton Senators head coach Cory Clouston.

The 39-year-old Clouston, who was named head coach of the AHL Sens on July 19, 2007, holds a 59-48-12-8 all-time AHL record. Prior to joining the Senators’ organization, Clouston spent five seasons as head of the Western Hockey League’s Kooteney Ice.

“I expect a lot from the players,” Clouston said. “What (the players) are lacking, I think that I can help them out. When I spoke to the guys I said, ‘we’re all in this together…When you look at the big picture, I’m very confident in myself and the biggest thing is, I believe in the guys in the dressing room.”

Prior to his stint with the Senators, the 49-year-old Hartsburg spent five seasons as head coach of the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. During that period, he was also assistant coach to Brent Sutter for Team Canada’s 2006 World Junior championship win, before going on to lead Canada to two more junior gold medals as head coach in 2007 and 2008.

Previously, Hartsburg had been at the helm of the Chicago Blackhawks (1995-98) and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks (1998-2000).

Hartsburg, a former NHL defenceman, was picked sixth overall by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1979 NHL draft. The native of Stratford, Ont. had 413 career points in 570 games over 10 seasons with the team.

Assistant coach Curtis Hunt was also let go by the Senators, but the team is trying to encourage Hunt to go down to Binghampton to help fill the void left by Clouston’s promotion.

Murray also said he wants to see how the coaching change affects the performance of his players.

With the NHL trade deadline of March 4 approaching fast, Murray said “we have some big decisions to make in that time.”

That’s all though.”

NEW PS3 FIRMWARE 2.60 IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD

Taken from US Playstation Blog

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

NEXT GTA GAME BASED IN TOYKO, COMING 2009?

Oh please god, make this true

Taken from GiantBomb.com

There’s plenty of of Grand Theft Auto content on the horizon with The Lost and Damned and China Town Wars, but how about a whole new game and location for the series? Rumors are flying about the next big installment in the series coming as early as the end of 2009. The newest issue of Game Informer apparently contains the following vague snippet between its pages:

We’re not talking about new DLC or a collection of previously available DLC, we’re talking about a full retail game. We expect this title to follow the suit of previous GTAs and use a subtitle such as GTA: San Andreas, etc. Tokyo might be a possible setting for the game, but details are non-existent at this time.

I personally haven’t seen the issue, so I can’t vouch for its validity or put it into more context, but if they’re talking about a new GTA IV-style game, color me excited. Tokyo would be a great choice, though I wonder what time period would be best. Maybe it’s time for Grand Theft Auto to head into the future so we can start having sex with prostitute replicants and throw them out of our hovercars to get our creds back.

SOCOM CONFRONTATION PATCH 1.30 IS OUT NOW

Hope the patch includes a fun option!

Taken from Joystiq.com

Try and stay SOCALM as we relay this exciting news! Sony’s frequently updatedSOCOM: Confrontation blog has been firing off tons of posts over the past two weeks releasing details about the trophy-infused “patch 1.30″ that will eventually be making its way to the game. A recent entry into the blog revealed the addition of two oft-requested matchmaking features that are SOCOMpletely overdue – a “quick match” mode and a party system which allows you to join games with groups of friends with ease.

The two features are actually linked — selecting the quick match option will take you into a party lobby, where you and your PSN friend platoon can congregate. After your party is built, you can choose one of the three match types to join (16 v. 16 Ranked, Unranked and Respawn) and be automatically matched up against similarly skilled parties. However, no word has been given on a specific launch window for the much-anticipated patch — SOCOMe on, Slant Six! The anticipation is killing us!
